Grow Your Roots
The Book of Colossians has place great precedence in my heart. Specifically, Chapter 2, where Paul writes to the Church in the City of Colosse and explains the importance of being built in Christ. Paul exhorts that we must “let our roots grow down into him, and let our lives be built on him” (2:7). Jesus is the root we must cling to and build our firm foundation on, which will permit our faith to grow strong and lead to an overflow of thankfulness. A root is the original cause of everything. It firmly binds and is meant to be established and deeply impressed. As we build ourselves in Christ we will begin to receive what Paul calls the mysterious plans, which is Christ himself. In Christ lies the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and as we abide in him, the Spirit will provide us with the Revelation of Christ and the hope he has given to those he called—his Holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance (Ephesians 1:18).
“For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So, you are also complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority” (2:9-10). Being in Christ’s union provides one with the cognizance and intelligence of knowing the importance of following his leadership to build up one’s faith and seek to grow in him through the Word and the Holy Spirit. Being in union with Jesus removes one from enlisting and conforming to the ways of the world and walking in utter disobedience. He begins to guide us with the power of the Word and the authority of the Holy Spirit. Submitting to the teaching of Jesus changes the way one thinks and behave which leads to making right choices. Jesus literally changes your life. In Ephesians Paul states, “we are to lead a life worthy of our calling, for we have been called by God” (1:1). Being called by God to do a great work on the earth is vital for building each other up. Christ makes the whole body fit together perfectly, and while each part is working together, we as the body of Christ are healthy and growing in love. Being rooted in Christ builds the mind, so we no longer have to entertain things that are impure, which forces our thoughts and attitudes to be renewed to think and act like Christ. This drives a purity that doesn’t allow sin to control our lives with anger, greed, lust, idolatry, covetousness, and foul language. Through connection with Christ we are planted with goodness, generosity, forgiveness, kindness, patience, and self-control. This immutable growth in Jesus drives a life that is worth living and establishes the way we are to thrive on the earth. We are called to be Jesus’ disciples and to do a mighty work on the earth and its imperative that we don’t miss this importance.
We must establish ourselves in Jesus and believe that he is the way, the truth, and the life because he desires to give us a life that is full of abundance. We must be rooted in Christ and make sure he is our firm foundation because that is the only way one will truly experience freedom.
